About Marti Waltheim
Author, conservationist and citizen scientist
Born in Southern Rhodesia, I grew up in Rhodesia and remained in independent Zimbabwe for eight years before emigrating to South Africa. My family heritage in Southern Africa dates back to 1727.
Educated at Churchill High School, Salisbury, I went on to study for a BA Public Administration at the University College of Rhodesia but abandoned the course when the ‘Bush War’ broke out. I served eight years with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, six of them in the operational areas, before taking an early retirement package as Assistant District Commissioner after independence.
During my employment in South Africa I travelled extensively, managing and owning businesses in the Eastern Cape and Zululand. My passion for travel and wild places has never waned.
Thirteen years as an Honorary Officer with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife allowed me to pursue my passion for wildlife and wilderness conservation. Now resident in the small rural village of Riviersonderend in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, I assist Birdlife South Africa as a citizen scientist with various projects.
Retired, with time on my hands, I continue to indulge my interests in bird photography, historical reading and have embarked on the creative art of writing novels and short stories.
